How to check an overseas job offer

Check the recruiter, employer, contract and work-permit route before paying for an overseas job or handing over original documents.

Start with the recruiting agent

Use the Ministry of External Affairs’ eMigrate service to check a recruiting agent’s registration and the relevant emigration process. Match the legal name, registration details, office address and contact information. A logo, WhatsApp profile or social-media advert is not independent evidence of authorisation.

Check the employer and the actual role

  • Employer’s full legal name and work location
  • Occupation, daily duties, hours, overtime and weekly rest
  • Salary currency, payment schedule and deductions
  • Accommodation, food, transport, insurance and other benefits
  • Probation, leave, contract duration and termination conditions

Read the documents together

Compare the offer letter, employment contract and visa or work-permit information. Names, occupation and pay should be consistent. Ask for an explanation of any difference before signing. Keep copies of each version, receipts and written communication.

For UAE offers

Check the official offer and employment process through the UAE Government and MOHRE where applicable. Some roles and locations have different competent authorities, so establish which process applies to the employer. A visitor or tourist visa is not permission to start work.

Understand the payment before making it

Ask who receives each payment, what it covers, whether it is permitted under the applicable rules and what the refund terms are. Obtain receipts. Do not rely on an old online fee limit or an agent’s verbal assurance; check the current official guidance for your case.

Pause when essential details are missing

Pressure to pay immediately, unexplained transfers to a personal account, an unclear employer or a promise of guaranteed approval should prompt further checks. Ask the relevant authority or Protector of Emigrants for guidance when the documents do not make sense.

Return to the overseas work planning guide and bring the offer details to your counselling discussion.
