Nursing in Germany: Two Different Routes

Studying to become a nurse in Germany and moving to Germany with an existing Indian nursing qualification are different pathways. This page explains the official stages without promising recognition, employment or a visa.

Route A: Study Nursing in Germany

Germany’s official skilled-worker portal describes the nursing professional vocational training programme as three years. It combines theory with practical learning in settings such as hospitals, long-term care and outpatient services.

The official requirements include an appropriate school certificate, physical fitness and proof of reliability. German-language requirements depend on the federal state and are commonly stated as B1 or B2 for this training route. The training provider and visa authority must confirm the level and accepted certificate for the individual case.

Route B: Move as an Already-Qualified Nurse

Nursing is a regulated profession in Germany. A nurse with a foreign qualification needs professional recognition and official permission to use the German nursing professional title before working independently in that role.

The competent recognition authority is determined by the federal state in which the person intends to work. The authority compares the foreign qualification with the German reference occupation. Recognition granted by a German state is valid throughout Germany.

What Happens if the Qualification Is Not Fully Equivalent?

The recognition decision may identify substantial differences. Depending on the decision, the applicant may need an adaptation period or a knowledge test. The competent authority—not UNEXT or an employer—decides the result and the required compensation measure.

Germany’s official portal states that qualified nurses generally need German at B2 level for professional recognition, along with professional fitness, medical fitness and proof of reliability. The authority handling the case provides the final requirements.

Documents Commonly Needed for Recognition

  • Passport or other identity evidence
  • Nursing qualification certificate
  • Transcript and evidence of training content and duration
  • Professional registration or entitlement to practise, where applicable
  • Employment references or professional-experience evidence
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Certified copies and German translations when required
  • Language, medical-fitness and good-conduct evidence at the required stage

The final list depends on the authority, the federal state and the applicant’s qualification. Use the official Recognition Finder for the place where you intend to work.

Employment, Recognition and Visa Are Separate

An employer discussion does not replace professional recognition. A recognition decision also does not by itself guarantee an employer, work permission or visa.

Where partial recognition leads to an adaptation measure in Germany, a residence route for recognition may be relevant. The applicable German mission and immigration authority decide the visa or residence outcome.

What UNEXT Can and Cannot Claim

UNEXT counselling can help a nurse identify the route, organise questions and prepare documents for review. The exact scope of language preparation, recognition support and employer coordination has not yet been approved for public publication and must be confirmed in writing during counselling.

UNEXT does not guarantee recognition, employment, salary, a residence permit or visa.
