NMC rules on online classes for foreign medical graduates: what the June 2026 FAQ says
The NMC FAQ dated 8 June 2026 explains how online-mode study is compensated. Here is what it means for your registration.
What the NMC FAQ clarifies
On 8 June 2026, the NMC issued a 12-point FAQ that clarifies its public notice dated 18 March 2026. The FAQ does not create new eligibility. It explains how existing rules apply to foreign medical graduates (FMGs) who studied through online mode.
Online-mode study has to be compensated
According to the FAQ, any period of the medical course carried out through online mode must be compensated. State Medical Councils (SMCs) verify each case on its documents and decide whether the transcripts are sufficient. The FAQ states that each case is considered on its own merits.
What the FAQ does not do
- It does not apply retrospectively. Earlier actions, including internships already underway, are not affected.
- A compensation certificate alone does not guarantee registration. It is one document that the SMC considers.
- The FAQs do not create any right or relaxation beyond existing rules. If they conflict with the regulations, the regulations apply.
The 10-year limit
For admissions abroad after 2019, the FAQ says the MBBS course must be completed within 10 years of the date of admission, and FMGs must clear the FMG examination within 10 years of admission. Check your admission date against this limit early.
Extra clerkship in India
The FAQ says that students who completed compensation and internship abroad, and can document it, ordinarily do not need an additional clerkship in India. Exceptions apply where the regulations require one or the SMC finds deficiencies.

Questions to ask your university and SMC
- Which compensation documents will the SMC accept for my online-mode period?
- Does my admission date fall within the 10-year limit?
- Will I need an additional clerkship in India in my case?
